Food Irradiation Details
Food irradiation for finished, packaged food products safeguards
consumer health by reducing or eliminating E. coli, listeria,
salmonella, and other food-borne pathogens in a "post treatment"
process that has the potential to be used like milk pasteurization.
Foods that can be irradiated effectively include meat, poultry,
grain, some seafood, spices, fruit, and vegetables.
Food growers, importers, processors, marketers and distributors have begun to use E-BEAM Services to extend product shelf-life as a way for distribution to expand geographic territories, and to extend the length of time required between in-store product rotation cycles. Organizations that support the electron beam food irradiation process for safety include the USDA, FDA, AMA, ADA, CDC and the Mayo Clinic.
Food undergoes the irradiation process on a conveyor within the original unopened cartons under the inspection of the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) with government inspectors present. The USDA recently approved E-BEAM processing for frozen and fresh raw meats, and is expected to approve E-BEAM processing of ready-to-eat meats in the near future.
Irradiated products are identified with the "radura" symbol
and must contain the words "treated with radiation" or "treated
by irradiation" on the packaging.
In addition to normal production irradiation processing, E-BEAM Services provides experimental services and consulting for companies who want to explore food irradiation and processing.
